Tunnel linings are the wall of a tunnel, and usually consist of pre-cast concrete segments that form rings. Cast iron linings were traditionally used in the London Underground tunnels, while steel liners were sometimes used elsewhere. The material from which tunnel linings are constructed will depend to a certain extent on the proposed use to which the tunnel is to be put. It is essential that tunnels that are to be used for vehicular or rail traffic should be fully fireproofed. Under extreme heat ordinary concrete can disintegrate or even explode. When designing and constructing a tunnel, civil engineers have to be vigilant as to the materials that are to be used.
There have been great advances recently into the design and manufacture of fireproof concrete tunnel linings and these are being utilised in the construction of tunnels in Europe.
